Autochthonous grape varieties

Etna is renowned not only for its unique geography and climate, but also for the variety and
quality of the native grape varieties that thrive in its fertile volcanic soils. The native grape varieties
main ones grown on Etna include:

Nerello Mascalese
Mascalese is considered the main grape variety of Etna, so much so that it is called the "king" of Etna wines. This variety has ancient origins, with traces dating back centuries in the Mascali area on the slopes of the volcano. Nerello Mascalese is a late-ripening vine, meaning that the clusters do not reach their peak of ripeness until late October.
Characteristics: Produces wines of great elegance and structure, ranging in color from ruby red to garnet with age. On the palate, it has soft tannins, lively acidity and aromatic notes of red fruits, spices, tobacco and a distinctive minerality, reflecting the volcanic soil. Minerality is often described as a hallmark of wines made from grapes Nerello Mascalese.
Nerello Cappuccio
Cappuccio, often considered the "companion" of Nerello Mascalese, has characteristics that make it complementary. Maturing earlier than Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio is used to bring color and smoothness to Etna's red wines.
Characteristics: Wines made from Nerello Cappuccio tend to have good structure, with good tannin presence and greater color intensity. Aromatically, it shows notes of dark fruits and spices, making them an excellent contrast when blended with Nerello Mascalese.
Carricante
Carricante is Etna's native white grape variety and plays a crucial role in the production of fresh, mineral white wines. It has been rooted in this area for decades and is grown mainly on the eastern slope of the volcano, where climatic and soil conditions are particularly favorable.
Characteristics: Wines made from Carricante have high acidity and distinct minerality, with aromas ranging from floral notes to hints of white-fleshed fruit. They are distinguished by their ability to age, developing complexity and depth with the passage of time.
